New Delhi [India], August 26 (ANI): The National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar condemned the alleged dowry murder of Nikki Bhatti in Greater Noida and questioned how society could act like this.
Rahatkar called it a matter of grave concern and urged swift action in the case.
Speaking to ANI on Monday, Vijaya Rahatkar said, “…I strongly condemn this incident. Daughters are not our property that we would do whatever we feel like with them. There have been movements in the country to end such malpractices. Those malpractices have taken up a new form now; this is a matter of grave concern.”
“NCW has taken cognisance of this, and we have told the UP DGP to investigate this swiftly. 4 people have been arrested so far. Police are taking swift action…How can society act like this?” she added.
Rahatkar also said the commission is in touch with the police and the family of Nikki Bhatti, and added that the family is in deep shock.
While speaking at the press conference, Rahatkar said, “We are in contact with the Police. We have been able to speak with the family members. The entire family is in shock, and we are waiting to speak to them…”
The Uttar Pradesh police arrested all four accused in Greater Noida’s dowry murder case and informed that they will be interrogated, following which the investigation of the case will progress.
Vipin Bhati, who is accused of murdering his wife, was shot in the leg by the police on Sunday and was later admitted to the hospital. He was sent to a 14-day judicial custody.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased woman, Nikki Bhati, held a protest outside the Kasana Police station, demanding justice.
The father of the deceased woman alleged that her in-laws killed her over their demand for dowry.
“Her mother-in-law poured kerosene while her husband set her on fire. They kept asking for dowry; now their demands have been met. I just married my daughter as per tradition. Their dowry demands have been met now that my daughter has died. They demanded a car and tortured my daughter for that,” the father said. (ANI)
